MPD Makes an Arrest in Benning Road Homicide

The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of a juvenile male in a fatal shooting that occurred in Northeast.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at approximately 5:08 p.m., Fifth District officers responded to the 1700 block of Benning Road, Northeast, for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile female victim, unconscious and not breathing, suffering from a critical gunshot wound. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene, and after finding no signs consistent with life, pronounced the victim dead.  

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the case to be a homicide on August 19, 2025.

The victim was identified as 14-year-old Zytina Mason-Brown, of Clinton, MD.

On Wednesday, August 26, 2026, pursuant to a DC Superior Court pre-petition custody order, a 17-year-old juvenile male of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed.
