Child Fatally Injured in Apparent Accidental/Self-Inflicted Shooting

Youth Services detectives continue to investigate Saturday’s apparent accidental/self-inflicted shooting that claimed the life of a 5-year-old boy inside his Bison Court home.

The child’s father reported that he was downstairs watching television when he heard a loud bang. He ran upstairs and found his son with a gunshot wound to his head. The child was rushed to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where he died. A .380 handgun was recovered. The boy’s mother had been out running errands at the time of the shooting. She said the gun had been stored in a drawer in the bedroom.

The investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office upon completion.

The MNPD would like to remind gun owners that free gunlocks are available at MNPD Headquarters, all eight precincts and the Records Division public counter in Madison.
